Today November 20th, 2019 my father woke up at 7:30am sharp. He put on his C.O. beanie and got in our family Honda Crv and took my mother to her work in Westchester. He got back home at 9:00am, then napped for an hour before waking up and taking me to school. While in the Poughkeepsie area he ran some errands for my mom, mostly just returning items she bought from the mall. Once donet he goes back home, but not to relax, but to load up our truck with old junk from our basement. He and my brother fill the bed up, tie it down, and hop back on the road. They arrive at DCC about 15 minutes after I get out and we're off to see my uncle. My uncle works at an art factory where we have been donating our junk as of late. The gate is locked from the inside , so my dad step jumps me over with the gate key to let the truck in. Once we empty the truck bed we all stop at Arby’s, my dad's favorite fast food. 30 min later we are home and hungry again, just in time for my dad to make dinner. As he puts the meat into bake he heads out once more to get my mother from her work, about an hour later they are home for dinner and the night. Although my dad probably wonders if he should go try the lotto.
This is an average day for my father, Patrick Thomas. My dad is a year retired from being a corrections officer for nearly 3 decades. Yet he still seems just as busy. While he might not be gone from noon to midnight, he’s now gone morning to evening. Gone are the days of staying up till another person’s morning, now he wakes up alongside them. So I thought about documenting my father's daily life, traveling with him for hours every week. Capturing what happened to my father when he was finally granted his freedom. Through this portfolio I hope to show people the kind of man my father is, and maybe along the way learn more about him myself.
